Faster Development, Outstanding Performance
People often ask us why the coaching at Grant Connell Tennis Centre seems different.
Instead of relying on traditional 'basket feeding' training, our coaches use an internationally acclaimed methodology that develops players faster and which has been officially endorsed by Tennis Canada. Our student - past and present - credit that critical difference to their continued success.
The Actions Method
Players who learn tennis technique through repetitive 'basket feeding' initially look good (mostly because it doesn't take long to learn how to respond to similar situations over and over again). However, motor-learning experts have classified tennis as a perceptual motor skill, one that relies on the player's ability to adapt to changing situations. Knowing when to use different techniques in tennis is just as critical as developing the techniques themselves.
The coaches at Grant Connell Tennis Centre use the Actions Method, Tennis Canada's official situational approach, to:
- Teach the skills necessary to effectively apply technique to match play
- Develop each player's perceptions, decision-making capabilities and ability to anticipate opponent's actions
- Help players achieve higher performance levels quickly
Actions is also a game-based approach that scales the game down to the player's level by using a systematic progression of racquets, court sizes and balls. Unlike traditional training, this approach:
- Emphasizes cooperative practice
- Boosts learning by allowing for longer rallies
- Helps players develop the technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of the game for long-term success
