Community Partners

Working with community organizations

The North Vancouver Recreation Commission, established in 1970 as a partnership between the City of North Vancouver* and the District of North Vancouver*, has been delivering award-winning recreational programs and services for more than 30 years. During that time, the Recreation Commission has developed a number of valuable partnerships with community organizations. Working in cooperation with our partners, we jointly develop innovative programs and operate facilities to serve the needs of the North Vancouver community. Our community partners make valuable contributions that enhance your recreational experience and quality of life.

Capilano Community Services Society (CCSS)

Located at Delbrook Community Centre, this non-profit society serves residents in the City and District of North Vancouver and works with local schools, RCMP and service providers. This grass roots organization relies its 250 volunteers and a small staff to provide:

  • Youth Outreach Programs (ages 11 to 19) that focus on ensuring youth have access to resources to reduce risks, as well as providing support to individuals 'at risk' and their family. Youth outreach workers facilitate peer counseling and conflict resolution, and role model positive social and life skills development. A youth Drop-In Centre is located at William Griffin Recreation Centre, and an outreach Addictions Prevention Program delivers prevention presentations to Grade 8 students.
  • Seniors' Hub, operated by 2 staff and 200+ volunteers, offers12 services to improve the health and quality of life of more than 500 very frail and isolated seniors. By providing seniors with increased activity, peer support, and a sense of belonging to a community, the Seniors' Hub helps them stay in their own homes, retain their dignity and have a sense of purpose until the end of their lives.
  • Red Cross Loan Program offers free short-term loans of medical equipment (such as mobility and bath aids) to the North Shore community. The Red Cross supplies the medical equipment and CCSS staff and volunteers manage the program. In 2005/2006, CCSS loaned 4,800 pieces of equipment to 2,200 people on the North Shore.
